It has been a successful season so far for the Georgia basketball team, but that success does not come without concerns as conference play begins January 3rd against Auburn. We highlighted positive takeaways in a previous post; here, we will look at three areas of concern as Georgia heads into SEC play.
There was a lot of uncertainty entering the 2025-26 season for the Georgia basketball team, but they have outperformed expectations so far. Coming into the season, Georgia had just 4 returning rotation players from a year ago when they made the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2015. This is common in college basketball now with the transfer portal, but it comes with a lot of uncertainty year over year.
Looking to build on their NCAA appearance a season ago, Georgia has relied on five transfers, four returnees, and two true freshmen so far this season, and they have gotten off to a quick start. Georgia has started the season 9-1, with its lone loss coming to Clemson in overtime.
Georgia has adopted a new, fast-paced style of play this season that it had not used previously in the Mike White era. This has allowed the team to look completely different from a year ago.
Here are some takeaways on what I have seen so far this season.
Georgia has opened the season with an 83-78 win against Tennessee Tech in Athens. It was not always the prettiest performance but Georgia was able to do what matters most and came out with the victory in the end.

The Georgia basketball team ended their 2023-24 season positively after advancing to the NIT Semi-Finals. Georgia came into last season with NCAA tournament hopes but they had to settle for an NIT bid but they made the most out of the opportunity. After falling to Seton Hall in the NIT, a lot of questions loomed for this upcoming offseason. There were questions about which players would stay, who would transfer and who would arrive at UGA from High School and the transfer portal.
Wow! What a way to begin conference with a quality win on the road. Georgia beat Mizzou yesterday behind a strong team effort and great performances from Noah Thomasson, Justin Hill and Russel Tchewa.
Georgia travels to Columbia, Missouri on Saturday afternoon to take on the Missouri Tigers at 1 ET. Georgia (10-3) takes an 8 game winning streak on the road to begin conference play.
Georgia beat their instate rival Georgia Tech 76-62 on Tuesday Night in Athens to improve to 6-3 on the year. This was Georgia’s first win over Tech since 2019 and it snapped a 2 game losing streak to the Jackets.
Georgia (5-3) takes on their instate rival Georgia Tech (4-2) on Tuesday Night at 7:30 inside Stegman Coliseum. Georgia is looking to break a 2 game losing streak to Tech and the Dawgs have not defeated Tech since 2019 when Georgia was led by Anthony Edwards.
Georgia travels to Tallahassee Wednesday Night to take on Florida State at 9:15 as part of the ACC/SEC challenge. Georgia has another big challenge and opportunity ahead of them against a Florida State team that is much better than some thought.
Georgia traveled to the Bahamas for the Baha Mar Hoops Championship with hopes of a breakthrough weekend but come back to Athens 0 – 2 after losing to Miami and Providence. These are both quality opponents that Georgia faced but Georgia had a real opportunity against Providence but faltered down the stretch.
Georgia opens up the Baha Mar Hoops Bahamas Championship on Friday afternoon at 3:30 against the Miami Hurricanes. Miami is currently ranked #12 in the country and is coming off a final four appearance a year ago, so this will be another difficult test for Georgia.
Georgia begins their home basketball schedule with a challenging test against Wake Forest on Friday at 7 ET. Georgia fell to Wake Forest 81-71 in Winston-Salem last season and they hope this year will provide a different result.
Georgia’s 2023-24 basketball season did not get off to the start many hoped for, as they fell to Oregon 82-71 on Monday afternoon. Georgia got off to a slow start in the game and could never fully recover the rest of the game.
We made it to the college basketball season and the dawgs begin the year in Las Vegas against the Oregon Ducks Monday at 4:30. This should be a great way to kick off the season and provides Georgia with a tough test to begin the year.
